Chapter 45: Do You Think It’s Pretty?
The morning after the thunderstorm finally cleared, Cheng Xiaonuan felt suffocated in the opulent villa. By July, the heat was stifling. He dug through his wardrobe, pulling out a faded white T-shirt and khaki shorts washed nearly colorless. A cheap black sun hat, years old, completed his outfit as he stepped outside.
Standing on the bustling city street, he felt utterly lost. The villa was his cage; outside, he had nowhere to go. After much thought, he boarded a bus to a distant mall.
He wanted to buy little clothes and toys for the baby. Mall prices were steep, and his funds were meager, but if he bought just one or two items each month after scrimping, eight months would yield a small collection. With frequent washing, it might be enough. Xiaonuan spent freely on Shen Qingchen and his brother, and now on the baby, always forgetting himself. His mother had taught him kindness, honesty, and selflessness – lessons etched deep. But sometimes, a little selfishness wouldn’t hurt. A fool wouldn’t understand.
He deliberately chose a different mall, desperate to avoid them and Shen Qingchen’s wrath. Fate, however, is inescapable. As Cheng Xiaonuan left the baby store, two familiar figures emerged from a nearby jewelry shop.
Half a month had passed, yet Shen Qingchen looked unchanged – tall, handsome, and coldly perfect. Only the couple's T-shirts were new: deep purple this time, with broad stripes. Their hands were tightly clasped, a public declaration. Xiaonuan instinctively clutched his shopping bag, momentarily numb before the pain registered.
I’ve never seen A’qing wear purple before… it suits him. The thought pierced him a second later. No… A’qing looks good in anything. His eyes burned.
He tried to slip away before they noticed, but after only a few steps, hurried footsteps closed in behind him. A familiar voice called out.
"Ge! (Brother!)"
Xiaonuan froze, forced to turn. Cheng Ruochen, hand-in-hand with Shen Qingchen, walked briskly over, frowning. "Ge, you saw me just now. Why didn’t you say hello?"
The sight of them together was agony. Xiaonuan forced himself to respond, "I… I didn’t see you."
"What a coincidence, meeting you both again..."
"Indeed! Qing and I are getting married at the end of the year. Seems ages away, but he dragged me out ring shopping anyway." Cheng Ruochen’s face radiated false bliss. He lifted his left hand, displaying an opulent gold and diamond ring on his ring finger. "Ge, look. Do you think it’s pretty?"
Xiaonuan stared at the ring for a long moment. He nodded, a fragile smile touching his lips. "...Pretty."
