Ch. 33: Otherwise, Give Him to Me
The two arrived at their destination just as a sliver of sunlight peeked over the distant horizon. Cheng Ruochen excitedly pulled Shen Qingchen out of the car, choosing a relatively clean-looking large rock to sit on, snuggled close.
"Qing, look, look, the sun's coming out!" Cheng Ruochen gazed towards the light, a gentle breeze ruffling his hair.
Shen Qingchen watched him.
The young man's delicate profile easily overlapped with the little fool's face, except the latter was thinner, his complexion always tinged with a sickly pallor. Compared to Cheng Ruochen's healthy, cheerful appearance, Cheng Xiaonuan seemed increasingly unsightly.
Yet another image involuntarily surfaced in his mind... In the dim hospital room, the little fool stood by the window, quietly looking outside, pointing at the sky and murmuring softly to him.
"A'qing... look at the stars outside..."
"That one is Mama... that one is Baby..."
"What are you thinking about?" Cheng Ruochen asked curiously when he didn't respond.
His thoughts interrupted, Shen Qingchen snapped back instantly. "Nothing. Just a bit sleepy."
He wasn't really a romantic person, never having experienced a love worth truly investing his heart in. With his previous flings, even sending gifts was mostly handled by his assistant. Getting up before dawn like today, driving for hours just to come to this godforsaken mountain to watch the sunrise? Never happened before.
Only Cheng Ruochen could make him do this.
"Annoying, you're not allowed to space out when you're with me." Cheng Ruochen frowned.
"Alright, alright, I'll focus on watching the sunrise with you." Shen Qingchen smiled, pulling him into his embrace.
Cheng Ruochen rested his head on his shoulder, smiling sweetly. "That's more like it."
Below the cliff was a vast expanse of emerald green forest. Beautiful mountains, beautiful scenery, birdsong. He closed his eyes, enjoying the gentle morning breeze, feeling an unprecedented ease and joy.
At times like this, people always liked to ask distant, impractical questions. Even knowing promises weren't really trustworthy, they couldn't help but ask.
"Qing, will you really pamper me forever, liking only me?..." Cheng Ruochen stared at his handsome profile, expectant.
Shen Qingchen answered without hesitation. "Of course. I've only ever liked you."
"My temper is really bad." Cheng Ruochen curved his lips.
"I'll tolerate you. I'll allow you to be spoiled." When it came to coaxing lovers, Shen Qingchen had always been talented.
Cheng Ruochen was very satisfied with his answer, beaming.
Shen Qingchen had been to Ling Mountain before. He often went to the nearby resort to soak in hot springs during his leisure time. But Cheng Ruochen was there for the first time and found everything incredibly novel. He insisted on touring the scenic area. Going back the same day was too rushed, so Shen Qingchen stayed with him at a hotel overnight, returning only at noon the next day.
In the afternoon, Cheng Ruochen had a variety show recording scheduled. Shen Qingchen dropped him off and went to the company. A day's worth of work piled up; trying to handle it in half a day clearly wasn't enough. He worked overtime until past 8 PM before barely finishing. Adding traffic congestion, it was nearly 10 PM by the time he got home.
The villa was quiet and empty late at night. Presumably, Cheng Xiaonuan was asleep by now.
Fatigue prevented his mood from lifting. Shen Qingchen quickly went upstairs, intending to wake Cheng Xiaonuan to cook him a bowl of noodles. But when he entered the master bedroom, he found no one there.
His first thought was that the fool had disobeyed him again and run out. Suppressing his anger, he dialed the other's phone.
No answer.
"Idiot... Dares not answer the phone..." Shen Qingchen glared at the screen, his face darkening, gritting his teeth.
The feeling of the other's actions slipping beyond his control made Shen Qingchen extremely irritable. Like a headless fly, he paced around the room, his mind racing to think of places the other might have gone. The final conclusion was that, this late, Cheng Xiaonuan had nowhere to go.
He stubbornly dialed the number several more times. When he finally calmed down a little, he faintly heard the sound of a phone vibrating in the room.
After searching everywhere, he finally found a somewhat chipped white senior citizen's phone under the pillow.
It was Cheng Xiaonuan's phone.
He bent down to pick it up, his gaze becoming distant.
If Cheng Xiaonuan had gone out, he wouldn't have left his phone behind.
So then...
An absurd thought flashed through his mind. Shen Qingchen's pupils constricted sharply. He sucked in a breath and abruptly turned, rushing out of the room, sprinting downstairs at top speed.
The storage room door wasn't locked. He pushed it open easily. Walking a few steps inside, he saw a yellowing white sofa—and lying on it was unmistakably the man he was looking for.
He seemed terribly afraid of the cold, curled up slightly, his long, thick black lashes lying obediently. His face was as pale as a ghost.
Shen Qingchen's throat tightened. Instinctively, he went over and shook his shoulder urgently. "Cheng Xiaonuan! Cheng Xiaonuan! Wake up!"
About half a minute later, Cheng Xiaonuan slowly opened his eyes. But his vision was unfocused, his gaze drifting as he looked at the person above him. When he spoke, his voice sounded like he'd swallowed gravel, unbearably hoarse.
"A'qing…"
"Why did you take so long to come…"
"I waited for you for so long…"
Shen Qingchen breathed a slight sigh of relief. His face cold, he picked the man up, biting his lip with lingering fear. "You idiot! I told you not to come out, so you really just stayed here without moving? If I hadn't come home for a week, would I have come back to collect your corpse?!"
Two whole days without food, severely dehydrated. Cheng Xiaonuan's mind wasn't clear now; he couldn't really hear the words spoken near his ear. He only faintly sensed Shen Qingchen was scolding him. He tried hard to focus his eyes on him, murmuring with reddened eyes. "A'qing… don’t be angry…"
"I know I was wrong…" A tear slid from the corner of his eye. The man weakly closed his eyes.
"Damn it." Shen Qingchen glanced down at him and quickened his pace.
After carrying Cheng Xiaonuan to bed and tucking him in, he first forced him to drink a few sips of warm water mixed with salt. Then he called the family doctor.
About thirty minutes later, Fei Wenluo arrived. Even though he understood the general situation from the phone call, he couldn't help but click his tongue when he saw the unconscious man on the bed. "You're really something. Such a sweet little thing, and you've reduced him to this state again."
"Less talk. Just treat him." Shen Qingchen's heart was tense; he had no time for banter.
Fei Wenluo set up an IV stand, took out the saline solution he'd brought from his medical kit, and hung it up. "I said, your beloved white moonlight is back. What are you still keeping this little fool around for? You don't even want him."
"None of your business." Shen Qingchen's gaze never left the little fool, frowning.
He didn't like Cheng Xiaonuan, but he currently had no intention of letting go. At least not before he married Cheng Ruochen.
"His body was already weak, and you keep tormenting him. Why not let him go early? He's so adorable; he might even meet someone who truly likes him later. Otherwise, when he's old and faded, and you don't want him anymore, how will a little fool like him, whose mind can't grasp things, survive?" Fei Wenluo sat down, took out an alcohol swab, grabbed the man's thin hand, disinfected it, and inserted the needle, his tone tinged with melancholy.
Shen Qingchen looked at him mockingly. "When did you become such a busybody?"
"Straight talk: I like this little fool. Otherwise, give him to me. I'll treat him well." Fei Wenluo lifted his deep eyes and smiled.
