Ch. 32: Stay Put
The high-tech floor-to-ceiling window installed in the bathroom had been popular in recent years. Shen Qingchen had it specially replaced a few months ago. When he was in a good mood during his leisure time, he liked to watch Cheng Xiaonuan bathe. The transparent glass allowed him to see everything inside clearly. Watching him turn shy and blush all over was particularly amusing and enjoyable.
After pressing the remote control switch, the outside couldn’t see in, but the person inside could still see out clearly.
Originally a product born of kink, it now served another purpose.
Cheng Xiaonuan saw everything clearly and heard everything clearly. He saw the man he loved most kissing his own younger brother. He heard A’qing making tender, solemn promises to him.
At that moment, he suddenly wished he were deaf, or had turned into a tiny ant, knowing nothing, so he wouldn’t have to feel this pain.
The sickeningly sweet conversation outside continued…
“Really?” Cheng Ruochen wasn’t entirely satisfied with Shen Qingchen’s answer. He just wanted to move in sooner, become the other master of this house.
“Of course. As long as you’re willing, we can go register abroad anytime. The place is up to you.” Shen Qingchen gazed at him gently and seriously.
Cheng Ruochen was overjoyed, though he didn’t show it. He withdrew from his embrace, feigning coyness with a smile. “Hmph, I don’t want to marry you so early. Are you so sure I’m willing to spend my life with you?”
He always knew that things too easily obtained wouldn’t be cherished.
If he had accepted Shen Qingchen’s pursuit seven years ago, the other might have dumped him by now.
“It’s alright. I’ll wait until the day you’re willing to marry me.” For those he cared about, Shen Qingchen always had enough patience to wait.
Cheng Ruochen happily curved his lips, cupped Shen Qingchen’s face, and kissed him lightly near his lips. “I like you the most.”
“If you keep seducing me, I might commit a crime.” Shen Qingchen laughed softly, flicking his forehead. “It’s getting late. I’ll take you back so you don’t sleep too late and feel bad tomorrow, delaying work.”
“I don’t have work tomorrow. I want to go out with you. How about I stay here tonight?” Cheng Ruochen suggested.
Thinking of the little fool still in the bathroom, Shen Qingchen paused. “Didn’t we just agree? Aren’t you afraid of me?”
“Afraid of what? I won’t sleep with you. I’ll stay in the guest room, lock the door tight, won’t let you in even if you beat me to death.” Cheng Ruochen pulled his arm, half-joking, half-coaxing.
His attitude was clearly insistent. Refusing now might damage the feelings they’d painstakingly cultivated. Shen Qingchen had no choice but to agree, indulging him. “Alright, whatever you say.”
Then, Cheng Ruochen said he wanted to take a shower first. Shen Qingchen took him to the guest room next door. Seizing the moment when Cheng Ruochen entered the bathroom, he finally had time to return to the master bedroom and open the bathroom door.
The man sat huddled in the corner, as if unaware of anyone’s arrival. It wasn’t until Shen Qingchen stood before him that he slowly lifted his pale little face, his reddened eyes looking up at him with a dazed confusion.
“Get up. Hurry.” Shen Qingchen looked down at him, swiftly pulling a few hundred-yuan bills from his wallet and tossing them at him. The action was no different from dismissing a beggar. “Ranran is staying tonight. You go stay outside.”
One of the pale pink bills hit Cheng Xiaonuan’s face, its sharp corner accidentally scratching his eye. His long lashes trembled. He stared blankly at the money scattered on the floor.
Seeing no reaction, Shen Qingchen frowned irritably, urging impatiently, “I’m talking to you. Did you hear me? Get up quickly. Ranran will be over once he’s done showering.”
“……” Cheng Xiaonuan seemed lost in thought. He maintained that posture for several seconds before slowly reaching out to pick up the bills, clumsily gathering them in his palm.
Actually, he wasn’t thinking anything. He was just doing what Shen Qingchen told him to do. After hurting for so long, his whole person was numb, his reactions naturally dulled.
He’d sat on the floor too long; his legs and feet were weak. When he stood up, his body swayed, unsteady. But he didn’t linger. Clutching the money, he lowered his head and walked out silently.
The man walked very slowly, his steps so unsteady it seemed he might collapse at any moment. Shen Qingchen couldn’t help but frown, reaching out to grab his arm. “Wait.”
“Forget it. It’s too late for you to go out.”
“Tonight, you sleep in the basement storage room.”
He’d given Cheng Xiaonuan eight hundred yuan—enough for a night in any decent hotel nearby.
But then it occurred to him that since the miscarriage, his mental state had been unstable. What if he ran out in the middle of the night again looking for the child? Something could happen.
He wasn’t overly concerned about this fool, but he didn’t wish him harm either.
And in this house, only a dirty place like the storage room was somewhere Cheng Ruochen would never go.
“……” Cheng Xiaonuan never resisted him. Obediently, he followed Shen Qingchen to the basement.
The storage room was large, but the lighting was dim. Only one small, low-wattage bulb hung from the ceiling. The dim, yellowish light cast down, making everything seem utterly desolate and cold.
It was piled high with all kinds of junk and old furniture. In the left corner sat a slightly yellowed leather sofa. Though old, it looked reasonably soft.
“Sleep here tonight. Stay put. Don’t make a sound,” Shen Qingchen instructed.
“Don’t come out until I come to get you tomorrow. Understand?”
Cheng Xiaonuan nodded silently and slowly sat down on the sofa. He didn’t speak a word the entire time.
Just as Shen Qingchen’s back was about to disappear through the doorway, the man, sitting there like a statue with his head bowed, suddenly murmured softly, his voice choked with tears.
“A’qing…”
Shen Qingchen instinctively turned back, only to find Cheng Xiaonuan’s gaze wasn’t on him. The low call was more like a nightmare-induced whisper.
His heart tightened slightly. He walked over and touched his head, his tone softening a little. “Be good. It’s just temporary. Once Ranran leaves, you’ll still sleep with me.”
He’d already taken too much time coming down. Afraid that if he delayed longer, Cheng Ruochen would come out and, not finding him, become suspicious, he turned and left the basement after speaking.
The little fool looked up blankly, staring at the closed door, his eyes gradually turning completely red.
Before going upstairs, Shen Qingchen went to the kitchen and heated a cup of milk for Cheng Ruochen. When he went up, Cheng Ruochen had just finished showering. The two of them curled up in the room watching TV for two hours.
Early the next morning, before dawn, Cheng Ruochen knocked on his bedroom door, saying he wanted to watch the sunrise at Ling Mountain. The place was a bit far from downtown; driving there took over two hours. Shen Qingchen, half-asleep, was forcibly pulled up, driven out the door, completely forgetting the little fool was still in the basement, and utterly forgetting what he’d told him.
