Ch. 31: The Stand-In
“Hello?”
“I’m at home.”
“Hmm.” Whatever the person on the other end said made Shen Qingchen’s smile deepen. Phone in hand, he walked upstairs while saying, “I miss you too.”
Under the opulent lights, Cheng Xiaonuan’s palm-sized face was its usual pallor, perhaps from staying too long in the hospital without seeing the sun. His body stiffened slightly. Silently, he followed behind Shen Qingchen, his footsteps making no sound.
“Hmm?” Just as Shen Qingchen pushed open the master bedroom door, he suddenly stopped. “You’re on your way to my place now?”
“Yeah, why? Not welcome?” Cheng Ruochen’s voice held laughter.
Shen Qingchen paused, pushed the door open fully, and entered the room, his voice softening. “Of course you’re welcome. How long until you get here?”
“Soon. Wait for me.”
“I’m driving, gotta go. See you in a bit.”
After speaking, the call ended abruptly.
He hadn’t expected Cheng Ruochen to suddenly want to come here. It caught him completely off guard. Shen Qingchen couldn’t help but frown. He put away his phone and turned to look at the little fool standing dumbly nearby. “Ranran’s coming over soon. Be good and stay here. Don’t run around. Remember, absolutely no sounds, understand?”
“……Understood.” Cheng Xiaonuan nodded, replying softly.
Shen Qingchen felt his warning might not be forceful enough. After a moment’s thought, he added, “If he discovers you exist, you won’t be staying here anymore.”
“……” Cheng Xiaonuan lowered his head further. Tears silently splashed onto his snow-white insteps. He said nothing.
Shen Qingchen knew he’d heard and didn’t press further.
About five minutes later, the doorbell rang. Before leaving, Shen Qingchen, still feeling uneasy, thought it better to have Cheng Xiaonuan hide in the bathroom.
The young man had just finished a schedule. He’d rushed over without even removing his makeup, adding a touch of allure to his otherwise handsome features. The moment he saw Shen Qingchen, he pounced, wrapping his arms around his neck.
“Qing, I missed you so much.”
Although Cheng Ruochen was a newcomer to the entertainment industry, with a big boss like Shen Qingchen backing him, he naturally had a flood of resources to choose from right from his debut and had never been idle. Before, whenever he was in the capital, Shen Qingchen would visit him on set almost daily. But recently, busy with who-knew-what, they hadn’t seen each other for three days.
He’d thought he wasn’t as fond of Shen Qingchen as he’d imagined, only drawn to his status and position. Yet, after so many days without Shen Qingchen clinging to him, he found himself missing him instead.
“Didn’t we just say that over the phone?” Shen Qingchen pinched his pert nose affectionately, smiling.
“But I just miss you!” Cheng Ruochen clung to him in his embrace, refusing to let go, his large eyes looking at him pitifully.
Shen Qingchen hadn’t expected this supposedly untainted lotus, meant to be admired from afar and not desecrated, to be so coquettish in love. It was both laughable and somewhat novel. Compared to the stupid, wooden fool upstairs, he was infinitely better.
“Alright, alright, you’ve seen me now, haven’t you?” Shen Qingchen said gently, lightly pushing him away. “Tired? Let me make you some tea. Go sit on the sofa for a bit.”
“I’m not thirsty.” Cheng Ruochen grabbed his hand, his gaze sweeping over the luxurious furnishings in the room, his eyes gleaming slightly. “It’s my first time at your place. Aren’t you going to show me around?”
This villa was larger and more luxurious than he’d imagined.
“No rush. This will be your home soon too. You can look whenever you want. You must be tired after working all day? Come sit, I’ll give you a shoulder massage.” Shen Qingchen deftly shifted the topic, pulling him towards the sofa.
Cheng Ruochen, thrilled at the thought of moving in soon, didn’t notice anything amiss. He stopped and pouted, “No way! I’m not tired. I want to see what your room looks like.”
“……” Shen Qingchen hadn’t anticipated this request right off the bat. He fell silent.
Although he’d told the little fool to hide in the bathroom, accidents could happen. If he were discovered, the scene would be disastrous.
“What’s wrong? Unwilling? You’re not hiding someone upstairs behind my back, are you?” Cheng Ruochen joked teasingly.
If he refused again, the other would surely become suspicious. Shen Qingchen laughed, “Of course not, you little rascal. Always talking nonsense.”
“Come on, I’ll show you now. But it hasn’t been cleaned for a few days. Don’t complain.”
“You’re the little rascal. I’m two years older than you!” Cheng Ruochen retorted playfully.
Last time when he’d sent Cheng Xiaonuan away, all his things had been cleared into storage. There were no traces of his life in the room. The entire second floor was quiet, though Shen Qingchen’s heart couldn’t help but tighten, fearing a mishap.
Unexpectedly, as soon as they entered the room, Cheng Ruochen suddenly turned and hugged him.
Shen Qingchen froze for a second, then slowly raised his hand to rest on his back. “What’s wrong?”
“Just wanted to hug you.” Cheng Ruochen mumbled, his face buried in his chest.
The young man, cheerful just moments ago, had suddenly changed. Shen Qingchen couldn’t help but worry. “What’s wrong with you today?”
“Did someone bully you at work?”
Cheng Ruochen didn’t speak. Shen Qingchen took it as silent affirmation and frowned. “I told you, we should announce our relationship sooner. That way, no one outside would dare bully… Mmm…”
Before he could finish, the young man in his arms suddenly rose on his tiptoes and kissed him, his soft, wet tongue invading his mouth.
In that instant, Shen Qingchen’s instinctive reaction was actually to push him away. An image of the little fool’s tearful, sorrowful gaze flashed in his mind. But quickly, he banished those distracting thoughts to the far corners of his mind. Taking the lead, he pressed Cheng Ruochen against the wall and kissed him deeply.
This was the one he loved. The one he’d deeply liked since high school. The one he planned to spend his life with. As for that fool? He was just a substitute. Always just a substitute.
Strangely, after the kiss, he didn’t feel the impulsive urge to tear off his clothes and possess him fiercely. With Cheng Xiaonuan, he often couldn’t control himself, always making the little fool cry before stopping.
Perhaps it was because the person before him now was someone he cherished more.
“With Brother Wang around, no one bullies me. I just missed you,” Cheng Ruochen panted slightly, sounding aggrieved. “But you disappeared for days. I had to come find you myself.”
“I want to see you every day. Be with you.”
His hints were so obvious; he believed the other should understand.
Shen Qingchen felt happy but also a pang of guilt. He pulled him into his embrace. “It’s my fault. I’ve been too busy lately, neglecting you.”
“It won’t happen again.”
“I’ve thought about it. If we lived together, I might lose control and do things that hurt you. Let’s wait until after we’re married to cohabit.”
“I want to give you the very best of everything.”
Two people in love, living together, would inevitably be like dry wood meeting flames. And Cheng Ruochen was someone he truly cherished. The most precious moment should be saved until after marriage.
Until then, he’d continue using that little fool as a stand-in.
In the dimly lit bathroom, the man huddled in the corner buried his face between his knees and slowly hugged himself tightly.
